On July 28, 2026, Tether, the largest company in the digital asset industry, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to foster financial innovation and digital asset integration within the Kenyan market. The NSE, established in 1954, is a cornerstone of East African finance with a market capitalization of approximately $26.4 billion and provides a sophisticated platform for trading equities, debt, and derivatives. This strategic collaboration is designed to address the evolving needs of the African financial landscape by focusing on investor education, blockchain-based infrastructure, and the tokenization of real-world assets.
A primary objective of this partnership is to bridge the educational gap for both retail investors and NSE-listed brokers through structured workshops and knowledge-transfer initiatives focused on digital capital markets. Beyond education, the MoU outlines plans to deploy Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to modernize market infrastructure. Specifically, the parties intend to utilize Tether’s Hadron platform to enable the tokenization and fractionalization of securities. This technological shift is expected to democratize access to investment opportunities, allowing both local and diaspora investors to participate in the market with lower barriers to entry.
For the broader financial industry, this agreement signals a significant move toward atomic settlement. By integrating blockchain mechanisms, the NSE aims to move away from its traditional three-level settlement cycle toward near-instant settlement, which would significantly enhance operational efficiency and reduce systemic risk. Furthermore, the partners are assessing the viability of utilizing USDâ‚® as a digital settlement infrastructure layer to improve liquidity and attract international capital.
From a strategic perspective, NSE CEO Frank Mwiti stated that this collaboration directly supports the exchange’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes leveraging technology to deepen market participation and position the NSE as a globally competitive hub. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino characterized the move as a transition of digital assets from speculative use cases into the realm of cross-border institutional finance, emphasizing the role of blockchain in creating more transparent and accountable financial processes. Ultimately, this partnership represents a landmark effort to integrate traditional African capital markets with the efficiencies of modern digital asset infrastructure.
