Tether Reinforces Latin American On-chain Infrastructure with $20 Million Investment in Mercado Bitcoin

In a significant move for the global digital asset landscape, Tether has announced a $20 million investment in a strategic growth financing round for Mercado Bitcoin, Latin America’s premier on-chain financial services platform. This capital injection is designed to accelerate the development of open and accessible financial infrastructure across high-growth markets, specifically targeting Brazil’s rapidly maturing ecosystem for digital asset adoption.

Since its inception in 2013, Mercado Bitcoin has evolved from a digital asset exchange into a comprehensive full-stack financial services provider, encompassing trading, tokenized investment products, lending, and stablecoin-powered payments. With over 4.5 million users and R$2 billion in issued tokenized assets, the platform operates under a robust regulatory framework, holding a Payment Institution license from the Banco Central do Brasil alongside several other licenses across Brazil and Europe.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, emphasized that the investment aligns with their mission to build efficient global financial infrastructure, noting that Mercado Bitcoin’s depth of regulatory licensing and tokenization infrastructure remains “unmatched” in Latin America. The capital will be utilized to scale tokenized investment offerings, expand payments infrastructure, and advance on-chain capital markets as Mercado Bitcoin pursues further international expansion.

Roberto Dagnoni, Chairman and CEO of Mercado Bitcoin, observed that the shift toward on-chain finance is no longer a question of “if” but “how,” stating that this partnership strengthens their ability to build the foundation for the next generation of financial services. As financial services increasingly migrate toward blockchain-based rails, this strategic alliance positions both companies at the forefront of a global transition toward more programmable and globally connected value movement.
