Circle Backs Flutterwave in Fresh Strategic Bet, Weeks After Ripple Investment

African fintech giant Flutterwave has secured a strategic investment from Circle Ventures, the investment arm of stablecoin issuer Circle, marking the company’s second major blockchain-focused backing in less than a month and reinforcing its ambitions to become Africa’s leading stablecoin-powered payments network.

The announcement comes just weeks after Flutterwave revealed that Ripple had participated in its Series E funding round, which valued the company at approximately $3.2 billion and was aimed at accelerating the rollout of Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin and blockchain payment infrastructure across Flutterwave’s network.

While financial terms of Circle Ventures’ investment were not disclosed, Flutterwave said the partnership will support the integration of USDC settlement directly into its payments platform, enabling businesses to accept local payments while settling funds in Circle’s dollar-backed stablecoin.

Building a Multi-Stablecoin Future

The latest investment highlights Flutterwave’s strategy of building a multi-rail payments infrastructure that combines traditional banking networks, cards, mobile money systems, and digital assets. Rather than betting on a single stablecoin ecosystem, the company is positioning itself to support multiple institutional-grade settlement options, including both Circle’s USDC and Ripple’s RLUSD.

“Stablecoins like USDC are no longer an experiment; they are becoming core financial infrastructure,” Flutterwave Founder and CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola said in a statement announcing the deal. He added that integrating USDC into Flutterwave’s existing infrastructure would allow businesses to move money “at the speed of the internet.”

According to Flutterwave, USDC settlement is expected to reduce settlement delays, provide access to digital dollar liquidity, and enable businesses to move funds beyond traditional banking hours. The company also said the integration will create a more direct gateway for global firms seeking access to African markets through regulated stablecoin infrastructure.

Following the Ripple Playbook

The Circle investment follows Flutterwave’s June 16 announcement that Ripple had taken an equity stake in the company as part of its Series E fundraising effort. That partnership included plans to integrate Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, Ripple Payments network, and the XRP Ledger into Flutterwave’s ecosystem to improve cross-border settlement and liquidity management.

At the time, Flutterwave said the Ripple partnership represented the next phase of its stablecoin strategy and would help create a “stablecoin-first” payment architecture across Africa. The initiative was designed to address persistent challenges in cross-border commerce, including fragmented banking systems, foreign exchange constraints, and lengthy settlement times.

The addition of Circle as both an investor and strategic partner suggests Flutterwave is seeking to remain infrastructure-neutral while expanding access to some of the world’s largest and most widely used stablecoins. USDC is currently one of the leading regulated digital dollar assets globally and has become a preferred settlement instrument for many enterprises and financial institutions.

Africa at the Center of Stablecoin Adoption

The move comes as Africa emerges as one of the fastest-growing regions for stablecoin adoption, driven by demand for faster cross-border payments, access to dollar-denominated value, and more efficient treasury management tools. Flutterwave said global stablecoin circulation now exceeds $300 billion and that businesses increasingly want alternatives to legacy banking rails.

Founded in 2016, Flutterwave operates in more than 35 African countries and says it has processed over $50 billion in payment volume for more than one million businesses, including global brands such as Uber and Booking.com. The company has raised more than $500 million to date and has steadily expanded beyond payment processing into broader financial infrastructure services.

With backing now coming from both Ripple and Circle within a matter of weeks, Flutterwave appears to be positioning itself as a key bridge between traditional finance and the emerging stablecoin economy. As competition intensifies among digital-dollar providers, Africa’s largest payments companies are increasingly becoming critical battlegrounds for the future of global money movement.
