Lipaworld and ZARU Partnership Expands South African Rand Stablecoin Payments

The planned partnership between Lipaworld and ZARU aims to bring the South African rand into global stablecoin payment networks. Under the arrangement, Lipaworld plans to support ZARU, a South African rand stablecoin, giving business customers access to the rand alongside established global stablecoins such as USD Coin (USDC) and Euro Coin (EURC).

Lipaworld, which provides stablecoin-powered financial services for individuals and businesses in emerging markets, intends to integrate ZARU into its business platform. Once implemented, customers would be able to hold and transfer ZARU and move between ZARU and supported global stablecoins.

Local Currency Stablecoins Extend Stablecoin Payment Options

The partnership reflects a broader effort to connect local currencies with digital payment infrastructure. According to the announcement, while dollar-based stablecoins can help businesses settle cross-border payments faster than many traditional methods, companies that operate primarily in South African rand still face currency conversion requirements at both ends of a transaction. A rand-denominated stablecoin provides an option for holding and moving value in the currency that businesses already use.

The article notes that local currency stablecoins and dollar stablecoins serve complementary roles. Together, they can help connect domestic financial activity with global payment networks.

Jonathan Katende, Co-founder and CEO of Lipaworld, said the company believes local currencies should be part of the future of stablecoin-enabled payments. He stated that working with ZARU is intended to connect the South African rand to Lipaworld’s global payments infrastructure and support practical use cases for digital rand payments.

What the ZARU Integration Could Enable for Businesses

Once the integration becomes available, Lipaworld Business customers could hold and transfer ZARU through the platform, move between ZARU and supported global stablecoins, pay suppliers in rand, and process payroll in rand. The planned functionality would also allow businesses to move rand-denominated value at any hour using blockchain infrastructure.

The companies indicated that additional launch details will be shared as the integration progresses.

Lipaworld currently provides services including stablecoin wallets, cross-border payments, business payments, invoicing, and local payout infrastructure. The company states that its goal is to connect businesses and individuals across emerging markets with the global financial system using stablecoins and modern payment rails.

ZARU is described as a South African rand stablecoin designed to provide individuals and businesses with a digital method for holding and transferring rand-denominated value. The company also notes that ZARU expands through selected distribution partners chosen for regulatory alignment and scale.
